Actuarial Techniques: Best Practices for Dealing With Data in Excel

Let’s face it, spreadsheets are one of the largest workhorses in actuarial work and business work in general. Various groups and organizations have developed best practices and guides for using Microsoft Excel, but very few focus directly on the needs of actuaries.

This webinar explores various methods for dealing with data in Excel [importing, exporting, and other interfaces]. In addition to explaining the processes with real-world examples, we will also review best practices for maintaining data fidelity and documentation for your spreadsheets, and see how actuarial standards apply.

There will be live examples (in Excel 365, though in general, it will not require anything more up-to-date than Excel 2010).

Topics:

  1. Data quality and documentation
  2. Pitfalls and prevention
  3. Importing data in various approaches [including using VBA]
  4. Exporting and documenting data
  5. Other options for interacting with external data [when the data are too big]

Who Should Attend?

This presentation is designed for those with some familiarity with Excel, and introductory levels of using VBA [using the VBA editor, running macros], as well as those wanting to learn more about how Excel may treat their data and needing to build data controls.

Examples being used will be with actuarial-related data, but this can be helpful for any involved in spreadsheets requiring their data and analysis be dependable.
