This Bootcamp is taught by Abraham Weishaus, who was formerly a financial reporting actuary for Guardian Life Insurance Company. He served on the SOA's Education and Examination Committee for 11 years. He also taught exam preparation courses for the Actuarial Society of Greater New York (ASNY) for 15 years, for CAMAR for 6 years, and for St. Johns University for 5 years. Abe is currently a professor at Columbia University, where he has been teaching for over 10 years. He has been an ASM author for over 20 years and publishes material for exams P, FAM, ALTAM, ASTAM, SRM, MAS-I, and MAS-II.
About the Authors
Johnny Li, PhD, FSA
Professor Li is Professor and the Holder of the Munich Re Chair in Predictive Analytics at the University Of Waterloo, Canada. His current teaching and research focus on the interface between actuarial science and predictive analytics. Over the years, his research contributions have led to several prestigious awards, including the Society of Actuaries (SOA) Redington Prize, the SOA Edward A. Lew Award and the SCOR Actuarial Award in Asia.
Andrew Ng, PhD, FSA
Professor Ng is an Associate Professor of Practice in Actuarial Science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Prof. Ng has more than 15 years of experience in actuarial science and financial mathematics education. He teaches a broad range of actuarial science and finance courses, including life contingencies, derivative securities, risk management, and predictive analytics. In 2012, he was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Prof. Ng received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.
I've been waiting for this manual! I've not been disappointed. Now I've got to do the work, but I've used Actex before and passed each time. Bought the printed option that comes with a six month digital access so I could get the actuarial university website access again.
As a programmer, I'm impressed by the work behind Actuarial university. This will make FAM-L easier to study for - for sure, but still lots to go through here. A big syllabus. I've used actex before and really liked their study guides, but this online teaching interface is much better than just having a printed manual. The offline e-reader app is key; needed in my case for sure, and I assume many other people too.
high, high marks for a really good set of videos. Actuarial University website is helpful in so many ways - love the keyword lookup function that links you to any content that matches that keyword. The author explains things well; like his demonstration exercises.

I purchased the study program in early dec. After 2 months, I'd say it's a 5 star.
not sure how you can pass an exam like fam-l without a manual of this quality. I got the video package and very happy with the extra detail in each video.
this is a very smart way to learn as you can look up every topic in the manual with one-click. I likehow it works.
Skipped LTAM to wait for FAM-L, hoping it will be easier. The jury is still out on that. This is just a preliminary review, but I was also waiting for this Actex manual to come out. All the material is on Actuarial University, which if you haven't used it, it's hard to understand how helpful it is. All the topics are linked by keywords and it makes studying much easier. I had a problem with the scheduler early on, but they fixed it quickly. I like Actex, so, my summary is this - if my fellow FAM-Lers need a really good study program, this is it. (I bought the package with the videos included).
Purchased this manual; so glad I did. Tons of material, much more than FM. It's everything you expect in a really good study manual. I've used both ACTEX and ASM, both really good. And this is my 3rd time using GOAL which I definitly recomend too. Basically, 5 stars.
