About the Author
John Aprill FSA, MAAA
John Aprill has extensive experience in life insurance financial reporting and risk management. He also served on the SOA Education and Examination Committee for many years. This combination has resulted in a practical approach to learning the syllabus material.
"This was very poorly done. I had previously purchased PA and was hopeful for ILA 101 but this was extremely poor quality. The first section's title is misspelled which is the first of many typos, some giving incorrect meanings to the sentences. Unless significant revisions are done, this is not worth purchasing"
Thank you for the feedback — and I’m sorry this manual didn’t meet expectations. You’re right that typos/format issues (especially in a section title) are frustrating, and we take that seriously.
We’ve worked with the author on a full review for the next printing (planned for early 2026). The updates focus on cleaning up typos, punctuation/formatting, and readability, plus two fixes in the practice exam section (updated header/footer and replaced one question that moved to the ILA 201 syllabus).
One quick note for newer FSA candidates: fellow exams are a different experience from associate exams. For ILA 101, the manual is meant to be a companion to the required readings (including legislation/practice material), not a fully self-contained “teach everything” text like many ASA resources.
If you’re willing to share specific examples/pages, we’d love to incorporate them into ongoing improvements.
