About the Authors

John Aprill FSA, MAAA

John Aprill has extensive experience in life insurance financial reporting and risk management. He also served on the SOA Education and Examination Committee for many years. This combination has resulted in a practical approach to learning the syllabus material.

Cong Nie, Ph.D., FSA, FCIA Dr.

Cong Nie is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA). He earned his Ph.D. in Statistics with a concentration in Actuarial Science from The University of Western Ontario. His professional experience spans assurance services and stochastic modeling, with a particular focus on IFRS 17 education and implementation. Dr. Nie is deeply committed to actuarial education and currently contributes to the development of examination content for the Society of Actuaries. He finds great fulfillment in helping others master complex actuarial concepts and supporting the learning journeys of aspiring actuaries. His research interests lie in the theoretical and practical aspects of phase-type actuarial models, with a particular emphasis on issues of parameter estimability and estimation.
