About the Author
Ambrose Lo Ph.D., FSA, CERA
Ambrose Lo, PhD, FSA, CERA, is the author of several study manuals for professional actuarial examinations and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He earned his BS in Actuarial Science (first class honors) and PhD in Actuarial Science from HKU in 2010 and 2014, respectively, and attained his Fellowship of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) in 2013. He joined the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, the University of Iowa (UI) as Assistant Professor of Actuarial Science in August 2014, and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in July 2019. His research interests lie in dependence structures, quantitative risk management as well as optimal (re)insurance. His research papers have been published in top-tier actuarial journals, such as ASTIN Bulletin: The Journal of the International Actuarial Association, Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, and Scandinavian Actuarial Journal. He left the UI and returned to Hong Kong in July 2023.
Besides dedicating himself to actuarial research, Ambrose attaches equal (if not more!) importance to teaching and education, through which he nurtures the next generation of actuaries and serves the actuarial profession. He has taught courses on a wide range of actuarial science topics, such as financial derivatives, mathematics of finance, life contingencies, and statistics for risk modeling. He is the (co)author of the ACTEX Study Manuals for Exams ATPA, MAS-I, MAS-II, PA, and SRM, a Study Manual for Exam FAM, and the textbook Derivative Pricing: A Problem-Based Primer (2018) published by Chapman & Hall/CRC Press. Although helping students pass actuarial exams is an important goal of his teaching, inculcating students with a thorough understanding of the subject and logical reasoning is always his top priority. In recognition of his outstanding teaching, Ambrose has received a number of awards and honors ever since he was a graduate student, including the 2012 Excellent Teaching Assistant Award from the Faculty of Science, HKU, public recognition in the Daily Iowan as a faculty member "making a positive difference in students' lives during their time at UI" for nine years in a row (2016 to 2024), and the 2019-2020 Collegiate Teaching Award from the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
In my opinion, the ACTEX Study Manual for MAS 1 is the best learning material in comparison to other competitors. What makes it stand out is the quality of the explanations of the concepts and the use of lots of past exam questions to explain the material. I also really love GOAL! I found that the questions in the study manual were too challenging at first, but then when I used GOAL, more specifically, when I worked on the “Core” questions, I was much more prepared.
Attacking Mas 1 step by step with this comprehensive manual. Well written and the Goal program is as good as any practice tool out there.
I passed using this manual, so I recommend it. I used the manual more than goal because the manual is so complete, but I did like Goal's time sample exams. I completed 3 of them and found it helpful to prepare for the actual exam. I've done this for other exams, but using the study manual exams. I prefer doing them now online with Goal.
I used this study manual last year and it was a life saver - honestly. Lo is good and responsive too. The goal database added hundreds of topic by topic questions/solutions. It seems as if more videos are coming too - I hope. That would help for some topics.
I bought the print manual. It arrived in 2 days and I've been using it for a few weeks. Easy to comprehend the concepts and the sample questions are some of the best I've seen in a manual. GOAL has hundreds more questions with several more practice tests. The solutions are also good in Goal. No video solutions, but I don't miss it. not necessary imo.
I've used AcTex since college and find the printed manuals more than enough, if you can devote the hours, stick to a study schedule. This manual is very good and it comes with Goal, review sheet (which is also good).
best manual for Mas-1, no doubt. Comes with professor videos too. The Goal Score is similar to Adapt.
love Goal and the professor support (and of course the manual). Some videos are "coming soon", but overall this is all you need and more.
I was surprised by the number of videos that came with this study prgram. Super bonus not expected, but def appreciated. The manual is thorough, so much so that I only used GOAL for timed quizes, mostly. I also did one simulated exam which I found to be harder than the actual exam.
manual+goal is really, really helpful. I think I worked everyone practice quiz they have in goal. The practice test are exactly what you need too.
I could not have been this well prepareed for mas-1 without actex. Thank you.
Wanted to thank Actex for this manual - pass my exam. My goal score was 71; got an 7 on the exam.
Note, the package with the GOAL database, but not videos for all the topics. Still all you need to pass. The vids may just be exttra expense so, not needed.
I tried a video only course for this exam and failed. :( Basically, i think I needed more practice under time pressure. Goal does that, but it also comes with the study manual, so I bought the study manual package. Definitely worthh the price. I'm much better off having the right tools. My bad. Just passing along my experience for ya'll.
Happy to recommend this manual to other CAS students. The author walks you through it. Using Goal is easy and it's nice to see your goal score rising over time.
I passed using nothing but this manual and goal. On to mas-ii.
If you can afford this manual, buy it. I think it's a lot, and you have to pay for shipping, but you do get a hard copy delivered in 2 days for me - something important to me + GOAL q&a database which honestly is good enough to perhaps merit a higher price.
My straight-up comments are that the options for MAS1 and MAS2 are less than for the earlier exams. So… I figured actex would have a good manual and I was right. It covers it all as you would expect, but GOAL was a really big help. I worked a ton of problems. the mastery level questions were definitely hard, but then when it came to the test, I was ready.
hey, casualty students - actex seems to have put out a good resource here. I've been using it for 3 weeks now. Nothing but good things to say about it. I haven't tried goal, yet, but played around with it some. Planning on using it as I get closer to the exam date.
I found the earlier exams easier than MASI. I did pass this exam and have to credit this study manual.
I used the electronic version. The new interface is definitely better than the previous one that Actex was using. Had zero issues with it; worked very well. I like the actex authors and study manuals. I used GOAL again for this exam. It continues to improve as well.
Passed!
