Best Practices in Actuarial Spreadsheet Design

Spreadsheets are one of the primary workhorses in actuarial practice and business in general, but few of us have serious, rigorous training in their use and design. Various bodies have developed lists of best practices for spreadsheets, but these lists are often developed for accountants and financial analysts, and do not necessarily mesh with actuarial needs.

This session will cover high-level principles of spreadsheet design with a special focus on actuarial needs and issues, as well as specific practical implementation tips. There will be a demo of specific behaviors/techniques using an actuarial example, and there will be references to the ASOPs (but not too much!).

This ACTEX eLearning webinar is a reboot of a similar one produced in 2015 – updated to include developments in both technology and actuarial standards since then.

Learning Objectives Include:

  • Better understanding actuarial standards of practice applied to spreadsheets
  • How to build a framework for spreadsheet development from creation to testing to maintenance
  • The concepts behind building spreadsheets with future changes in mind
  • Employing specific practices within spreadsheets to result in reliable work products as well as being practical in their use
  • Practices for handling situations where systems other than Excel are being used, and when multiple people are editing the worksheet

Who Should Attend This Webinar:

This Best Practices webinar is intended for ALL levels of Excel users, from beginners to those who have years of experience, but need more of a framework to think about their design, and for those managing the people who will need to implement the design.

This presentation should be accessible to any quantitative person who must do fairly complex calculations in spreadsheets.
