ACTEX Learning Presents: ACTEX eLearning Webinar: Data Science for Actuarial Managers
Sure, everyone wants to say that their company has embraced "data science", but what does that even mean? If you're an actuary, you may well ask, "If I've not been using data science all these years, what exactly have I been doing?" And if you manage a team of actuaries, are you managing a data science team? What should you be telling them to do? Are they doing it well?
This webinar is designed to help you answer those questions. Moreover, it will give you a leg up on understanding and evaluating the array of new technologies that folks on your team, or in your company are talking about. Allocation of your team's time represents a significant investment. Data science offers the promise of maximizing the return on that investment, but only if your people are learning and using the right tools.
So, if you're confused by a confusion matrix, naive about naive Bayes, or if you want to know the difference between a cluster and a net, this webinar will help you sort things out.
Learning Objectives:
In this webinar, you will learn:
NOTE: Although I will touch on the topic of "big" data, I will only superficially cover specific implementations like map-reduce, Hadoop, Spark and other technologies. Also note that when talking about data science tools, the emphasis will be on general purpose, open-source technology.
Who Should Attend This Webinar?
This webinar is intended for individuals who have been practicing actuaries for a number of years and are, or expect to be, managers. No prior knowledge of data science per se is expected.
About Your Instructor
Brian A. Fannin, ACAS
Please take a moment to read Brian's story in the ACTEX Blog: "My Journey with R"
Brian is the founder and captain of PirateGrunt LLC, an actuarial, data and predictive modelling consultancy. Brian has held a number of positions at both primary and excess insurance companies, both in the US and overseas. He is the chair of the CAS open source software committee, with a focus on R. His principle areas of research are in stochastic reserving, predictive modelling and visualization of data. He is the author of the MRMR, raw, represtools and Imaginator R packages.
Here’s What Participants Said about Brian’s Last Webinar:
“…I thought this presentation was PERFECT for someone like me … I think Brian explained the intention of the ggplot2 package in the way that Hadley Wickham would want it explained and it is an explanation that I had been missing prior to the presentation. A lot of lightbulbs went off in my head during this presentation.
… This was an impactful presentation that will actually improve the efficiency and quality of my work (and I can't say that about too many presentations...).”
“As an entry-level candidate, I found that this seminar can be a huge benefit in my career search with respect to my ePortfolio. Having case studies or other data analyses with the plots I've learned today should make for some serious second looks into the artifacts themselves.”
“It was fantastic, I use R nowadays a lot, but wasn't aware of having such a good package for plotting. The presentation itself was also very good, tempo perfect, I hope I can listen to you once again.”
“Appreciated the step-by-step walk through from data to client-ready visualization.”
